"Hot Summer" Oil on Canvas by Laurence Young

From a very early age Laurence Young has had a passion for making art. He grew up in Newton, Massachusetts and attended the University of Hartford in Connecticut, graduating with honors in 1974 with a BFA in art education. After a brief stint as a middle-school art teacher, he attended the Rhode Island School of design, receiving his Masters in Printmaking in 1979.

After ten successful years as the head of a printmaking studio in NYC, he sold the company and moved to Provincetown, where he has lived now for over 30 years. Under the tutelage of Lois Griffel, then the director of the Cape Cod School of Art, Young learned what it meant to be a full-time artist while honing his painting skills.

Initially a plein-air painter, Laurence is now a full-time studio artist. Working outdoors from life has served him well in the studio. His love for nature is visceral while his seascapes rock gently with the sense of the waters ripple as it ebbs and flows.

His innate color sense sets him apart, while his line work comes and goes within the work. Sometimes the drawing articulates the image, sometimes the drawing almost vanishes within the painting. The combination of drawing and painting adds incredible tension and life to each finished work, drawing the viewer in.

In addition to the current exhibit at Arcadia, Laurence is currently exhibiting at galleries in MA, Rhode Island, and Georgia and are part of private and public collections such as Provincetown Art Association and Museum and the NJ State Museum.

Painting measures 18" square.
