Hand Loomed Cotton Towels
Functional hand loomed art.
Laina Thierren, originally from New England of Abenaki heritage, learned to loom in 2000 while participating in an artists' collective studio in Vermont. Finding it therapeutic for her Gulf War related PTSD, she has steadily improved her skill over the decades, opening her own studio after moving to Montana in 2015. She now works with her daughter and her young granddaughters on as many as 8 different hand looms, creating functional works of art with a focus on reproducing traditional weaving patterns sometimes dating back to the Middle Ages.
Laina uses between 40-60% unmercerized cotton depending on how many colors are involved, with mercerized cotton making up the difference depending what colors are available at the time. Note that this makes these towels more durable than commercial towels but with a less luxurious handfeel or durability of Donna McLaughlin's 100% unmercerized towels.
All towels are pre-washed for colorfastness and to minimize further shrinking, but machine wash warm, tumble dry low is recommended. Plaids are seemed on all four sides, striped patterns are seemed at top and bottom only.
Towels measure approximately 16-17" by 24-25"
Note that unlike Donna McGlaughlin's towels from Truro which are one of a kinds, these towels are available in multiples and can be reordered in the same pattern if out of stock. Just email me and let me know which pattern you are interested in and how many you would like. New patterns will become available every few months.
