Fair Trade Mahogany Oval Serving Bowls
Sustainably harvested mahogany is hand carved into elegant ovals to create these beautiful, functional serving bowls which nest beautifully if purchased as a set. Perfect for serving bread, chips, fruit, and once oiled repeatedly over time, salads, grains, etc.
Mahogany is an incredibly durable wood, used for centuries for everything from furniture to serving pieces. After use with food, rinse off then buff with mineral oil on a cloth, then wipe dry and buff with a soft dry cloth. Over time the bowl will darken to almost black but will still show the wood grain while becoming more and more impervious to liquids and more lustrous.
Avoid using with acidic foods like balsamic vinegar or tomato sauce until it has been thoroughly oiled repeatedly to build up resistance. My mother has had a mahogany salad bowl my entire life. It has been used regularly whenever she has a large number of people at the table and is still in perfect condition after decades of use, with periodic oiling.
Purchased through a Fair Trade Federation member organization, funds raised from selling this product support a variety of community programs such as clean water, education and women's empowerment.
Small bowl measures 11.5 by 5.5" by 2" and weighs between 10 and 14oz depending on the density of the wood, large bowl measures 15.5" by 7" by 3" and weighs between 1.5 and 2lbs, depending on the density of the wood.
